The horse and the ship…

At the riding school today we were told to kick the horses gently when we wanted them to move. Otherwise, the instructor said, they would default to being lazy.

And then later in the day I read this quote – originally from the author and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exúpery and brought to my attention in James Clear’s newsletter…

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the people to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast endless sea.”

If like the horse, you are struggling to motivate yourself to do the work required of you and need a kick to get to you moving, it’s worth considering the possibility that the work currently required of you is the wrong work.

Find what it is you yearn for, and maybe you’ll find the work easier to do.

I'm Kieran and I play piano. Actually I do a bit more than just playing - I teach others how to play, and I write music, arrange it and host/produce shows.
