I was the last person in my year to finish the Leaving Cert.
Well along with a group of 10 or so others. Our last subject – Applied Maths – was on the very last day of the exam timetable and so we had to watch our classmates leave triumphantly one by one each day for a week before our freedom finally came.
There was certainly some jealousy involved, but also a real struggle to keep studying as everyone else was winding down.
And I’m sure some people have the same feeling now. Because depending on the industry in which you work, you are either currently winding down or watching others wind down as you are in the thick of your busiest period.
And it can be tricky if you fall into the second category. Just like it was for my classmates and I waiting for the Applied Maths exam to arrive.
So you have two choices in terms of motivating yourself to keep going.
You either tell yourself that when these other people are back to work at the start of January they will have to watch you wind down as they struggle to get back into it.
Or…you find meaning in what you are doing, exclude all comparisons with others, and keep going with that meaning in mind.
