“No-one thanks the postman for delivering letters”.
So said Welsh rugby kicking coach Neil Jenkins in response to the adulation that came his way after his protege Leigh Halfpenny delivered a flawless kicking performance to help the British and Irish Lions deliver a famous win over Australia in 2013.
“My job is to deliver goal kicks for the team, just as it is the postman’s job to deliver letters. What’s the big deal?”
You get thanked more in some professions than others for doing your job. The medical profession is one, sport another, and so it is also in music. It gives me a lovely warm feeling after a gig when people come up and thank me for the music I have just played. It always means a lot, to other musicians too, but at the end of the day it is our job.
I’m not saying not to thank us, just maybe thank the postman too.
So – a big thanks to Padraig for agreeing to get into this picture with me when I surprised him on the road this morning, to our own postlady Bernie (who was too early for me today), and to anyone out there doing their job this morning.
